Raksha
Bandhan celebrations in Kolkata very well portray the cultural
richness of the city. Though Raksha Bandhan is a festival of North
India, then also rakhi is celebrated with much fervor in Kolkata. On
this day, sister tie rakhi thread on the wrist of his brother and wishes
for his well being and prosperity. In Kolkata, this festival is celebrated by the name of 'Bhai Dooj' and thus little difference can be viewed in the traditions and customs. 'Bhai-Dooj' is very much similar to Raksha Bandhan. Due to cultural differences some traditions are celebrated differently in different parts of the country. Rabindranath Tagore, in the year 1905, has quoted that the festival of 'Raksha Bandhan' is a medium of bringing people together in the times of crisis. Thus, this festival of tying rakhi became important in West Bengal especially Kolkata. Even today, people celebrate Raksha Bandhan with the same vigor and fervor in kolkata. Colleges organize special Rakhi Utsav in which students sing Rabindra Sangeet and also recite his poems to mark the day. Many social as well as cultural organizations also make special arrangements for Raksha Bandhan celebrations in order to spread the message of Rabindranath Tagore. Although rakhi is not the major festival of Kolkata still like the other parts of India this day is celebrated with joy and happiness. People in West Bengal also tie the rakhi thread around the wrist of her brother. This is accompanied by the chandan tilak as well. There is no way to say that India is a true example of unity in diversity rather than with rakhi festival. Let the colors of this festival bring joy and happiness to your world all the year through. |
