When the festival of Rakhi comes, then Mumbai takes on a colorful spectrum of images with rakhis and rakhi gifts flooding the market.

In Western part of India, especially in Mumbai, the festival of Raksha Bandhan is celebrated by the name of 'Nariyal Purnima'. The festival is celebrated mostly by the fishing tribes as it initiates a new season for them. Nariyal Purnima is basically celebrated on the same day as Rakhi Purnima that is on the full moon Shravana day.

This day is also celebrated by offering prayers to Lord Varuna for invoking His blessings. Coconut are offered to Lord Varuna and hence the festival is known by the name of 'Nariyal Purnima'. As a part of the Rakhi rituals, coconuts are thrown into the sea as offerings to Lord Varuna. As the coconut possess three eyes, it is regarded as the perfect symbol of Lord Shiva and on this particular day is offered to Him.

One can find a huge variety of rakhi designs in the markets of Mumbai. Whether you are going for the traditional gaudy rakhi or the regal variety of today, the choices are endless. Even the dresses are specially tailored for the occasion of rakhi.

From colorful kurtas to attractive langhas, the variety dazzles everybody. So when we talk about rakhi celebrations in Mumbai, we are talking about a dazzling world of gaiety and festivity.
